The YWCA Syracuse & Onondaga County is a not-for-profit woman's membership organization, associated with both the national and international YWCA. The overall purpose of the YW is to improve the quality of life, empower and advocate for women and children. We serve women of diverse backgrounds and faiths, of different ages and life experiences. We strive to promote cultural diversity and understanding within the community as we provide programs such as childcare, residence services, and health education. Our mission is to create opportunities for women's growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision: peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all people. Our one imperative is the elimination of racism wherever it exists.

The first "Ladies" Christian Association" was founded in New York City in 1858. The Syracuse & Onondaga County YWCA has continuously served the needs of women since 1885. The primary purpose was to care for homeless working girls. Services expanded to include:

  • A boarding house
  • Concerns about discriminatory wages for women and child labor
  • Education and employment programs
  • Recreational programs
  • Day Care

Since 1885, our location and programs have changed many times but the mission--to empower women and children and eliminate racism --remains intact.

Today, we continue that philosophy through mission based programs such as:

  • Transitional and permanent Women's Residence program located at 300 Burt Street.
  • One early childhood education center:  Childcare at Fairmount Center
  • Nine school-age childcare centers located in Baldwinsville, East Syracuse, Fabius, and Syracuse City school districts.
  • Day of Commitment to Eliminate Racism & Promote Diversity.
  • Week Without Violence
  • Network luncheons
  • Public Policy & Advocacy
  • Institute for Public Leadership
