2015 Girls Summit Career Conference


What: Girls Summit Career Orientation Day

When: Saturday April 25th 2015 (9:00 to 3:30pm)

Where: SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry (1 Forestry Dr, Syracuse, NY 13210)

Admission: 5$ (Lunch will be included)


All girls from 7th to 12th grades are invited!




Bioacoustics (Syracuse University)

Acoustics is the science of sound. At this workshop you will learn that acoustics is important for creating musical instruments or hearing aids and that sound is also used to find oil and gas and to study earthquakes and climate change. Some animals, like bats, use sound to find their food.


Fiber Science (Cornell University)

Fiber science combines chemistry, physics, engineering, and in some areas biology to create textiles and other materials needed for manufacturing and technology. At this workshop girls will learn about Electrospinning Nanofibers and Material Properties. They will test fabrics made of different materials and learn how material choice is important to function.


Paper Engineering (SUNY ESF)

Paper Engineering is the science behind converting raw materials into paper products. Specialists in this field study topics in forestry and biology, chemical science, and related areas so they can create paper products appropriate to a wide range of industries. In this workshop participants will make paper from recycled paper; They will also test mechanical properties of different paper grades and tour the ESF’s pilot paper plant.


Environmental Engineering (Parsons Corporation)

Environmental Engineering is the integration of sciences and engineering principles to improve the natural environment, to provide healthy water, air, and land for human habitation and for other organisms, and to clean up pollution sites.


Computer Science (Microsoft)

Computer Science is the science that deals with the theory and methods of processing information in digital computers, the design of computer hardware and software, and the applications of computers. In this workshop, participants will learn how to build an app. 


Nutrition (Private Practice)

Nutrition is the study of food at work in our bodies, our source for energy, and the medium for which our nutrients can function.



In the panel we will address the following topics: academic and non-academic skills needed for college, college aspirations and expectations, critical steps for college entry, student financial awareness, support systems, etc. The panel will be moderated by On Point for College.
