Request For Workshops Proposals

Overview

The YWCA of Syracuse and Onondaga County, Inc. is pleased to announce a request for workshops for our annual Day of Commitment to Eliminate Racism and Promote Diversity. YWCA seeks workshop proposals from educators, business and private sector leaders, grassroots organizers and civil rights activists, to offer forty-five minute trainings and educational workshops that compliments the theme “Building an Equitable Society from Community to Companies – Action is Key” Workshop proposals are due April 5th, 2020. Selected workshops will be delivered in the morning of April 23, 2020 at Hotel Syracuse at Marriott, during the morning session. Notification of selection will be provided via email to the Point of Contact listed in the application by April 8, 2020.

EVENT BACKGROUND
Throughout the past two decades, YWCA of Syracuse and Onondaga County, Inc. has brought together local residents, community leaders and business professionals, at its Annual Day of Commitment to Eliminate Racism and Promote Diversity, to address the issue of racism in our community, provide training and education on multicultural communication and diversity initiatives, and offer public support to programs that combat discrimination and increase equity, diversity, opportunity, and inclusion. To promote progress towards a more equal society, YWCA of Syracuse and Onondaga County, Inc. will hold the Annual Day of Commitment on Thursday, April 25 2019 at Hotel Syracuse Marriott Downtown Syracuse. Themed “Building an Equitable Society from Community to Companies – Action is Key,” the event will feature educational workshops on equity, addressing structural and systematic barriers, diversity and inclusion, as well as inspirational reflections from local community leaders and the presentation of the 2020 Champion of Opportunity Award. The award will recognize individuals, institutions, companies, or organizations leading noteworthy efforts to promote diversity and eliminate racism locally or regionally. 2020 Champion of Diversity Awardees will be inducted into YWCA’s Diversity Achievers Academy at the Day of Commitment Luncheon.

The Workshop Application must be completed in full in order to be considered for selection. Although YWCA staff will do its best to accommodate preferred times for presenting, all instructors are requested to arrive at the event by 8:00AM.

Workshop Proposals
This is a competitive process. We will select workshops that comprise a balanced program. Workshop topics currently sought include:

EMBRACE DIVERSITY TO DRIVE ECONOMIC EXPANSION
Hidden Voices – a practical approach to identifying, retaining and leveraging diversity.
Global Employment Pool – Creating Inclusive work environments to attract and retain a talent pipeline

CULTIVATE YOUTH EMPOWERMENT TO DRIVE INNOVATION
STREAM 4 Full STEAM Ahead – Present opportunities to leverage a diverse community to promote advancements in science, technology, engineering, arts and math for students.
STREAM STEAM – Present STREAM & STEAM programs for youth in Syracuse and their recent accomplishments.

DRIVE EQUITY THROUGH CIVIC ENGAGEMENT – ADVOCACY, CENSUS, VOTING
The Power of One – How to make your vote really count
Developing Agency in Advocacy – Be Seen, Be Heard, Be Counted

What we’re looking for

The goal of this conference is to provide workshops in the theme of “Building an Equitable Society from Community to Companies – Action is Key”. We encourage proposals that support creativity and innovative practices while providing an interactive component rather than a speech or lecture-style presentation. Moderator/presenter must conduct work that reflects the values of equity, diversity, opportunity and inclusion. Workshop topic must fall within either of the topics listed above. Delivery of the workshop be conducted within forty-five minutes. At least one handout or reference piece must be provided to participants for enhanced learning.

We encourage you to further consider:
Participatory Design: Participatory workshops/presentations include opportunities for attendees to be actively engaged, making and creating in the session (as opposed to being passive observers).

Reflective Practice: Sessions with a reflective component provide an opportunity for participants to consider the overall impact of a project or idea, explore essential questions and understandings, and propose opportunities for replication, etc.

  • Title of Workshop: Please be sure the title accurately and concisely reflects the workshop content. (Sample title: The Power of Observation: Drawing & Printmaking)
