Soccer for Success

Soccer for Success is a free program designed to introduce children in K – 8th grade to the sport of soccer, while also providing them and their families with the tools they need to make healthy lifestyle decisions. The program supports children in improving their physical health, increasing their knowledge about healthy lifestyles, and improving their self-esteem and behavior.

The Soccer for Success program model is built upon Five Core Components: Physical Activity, Health & Wellness, Mentorship, Community Engagement, and Safe Spaces. These components make up the foundation of the Soccer for Success program and are the building blocks of the curriculum and training. Our evidence-based program provides a two – three times a week, 60 – 90 minutes per session curriculum that uses integrated learning activities to teach health and wellness lessons, typically focused on nutrition learning objectives. *Limited space available.

Soccer For Success Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

Using soccer as a vehicle, this program model teaches social and emotional competencies, adapted from Illinois Learning Standards for SEL, in an age-appropriate manner. The curriculum focuses on the following three goals:

  • Goal 1: Develop self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve school and life success
  • Goal 2: Use social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships
  • Goal 3: Demonstrate decision-making skills and responsible behaviors

Five core SEL competencies are integrated into the Soccer for Success programming through twelve topics over the course of twelve weeks. Those competencies and associated topics are:

  • Self-awareness (topics: Confidence and Hope)
  • Self-management (topics: Courage and Goal-Setting)
  • Social awareness (topics: Teamwork and Conflict Resolution)
  • Relationship skills (topics: Listening and Communication)
  • Responsible decision-making (topics: Respect, Sportsmanship, Growth Mindset, and Responsibility)

By integrating the topics into the warm-up, opening circle, activities, cool down, and the closing circle, and issuing thought-provoking challenges during and outside of practice, coach-mentors are creating an environment where these skills can be learned by children in a fun and engaging way through the vehicle of soccer.
