Black History Month Celebrations

Eliminating racism and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all is at the heart of the YWCA Syracuse & Onondaga County Inc. mission. This February our organization will celebrate Black History Month and honor the lives of those who have inspired change and led the crusade for a more equitable world.Within Zonta House, youth will be engaged in two special sessions in our Girls Inc. @ YWCA afterschool programming:Engaging Our Youth Ages 9-15 in Poetry: Black Sheroes/HeroesDate: Monday, February 14Presenter: Cedric Bolton, Coordinator of Student Engagement in the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Syracuse UniversityEngaging Our Youth Ages 5-8 in Virtual Interactive Cultural CraftsDate: Thursday, February 24Presenter: Sara Jo Brandt, Children’s Librarian at Beauchamp Branch Library, part of Onondaga County Public LibrariesA special thank you to Cedric Bolton and Sara Jo Brandt for helping us bring Black History Month to life in Girls Inc. @ YWCA!    Each week, we're also honoring African American women who have transformed our country and culture. Week One: Maya Angelou has influenced generations with her words, actions, and trailblazing career. Maya Angelou Facts            Week Two: Dorothy Height was a civil rights champion and longtime YWCA leader.              Week Three: Wilma Rudolph overcame significant health challenges to become a record-breaking Olympic athlete.
